Question 1

Can I use WD-40 to lubricate a noisy garage door?

Accepted Answer

No. WD-40 is a solvent, not a long-lasting lubricant, and it evaporates within days, so the noise comes back quickly. Use white lithium grease, silicone spray, or a purpose-made dry-film garage door lubricant instead.

Question 2

What lubricant should I use on a garage door?

Accepted Answer

White lithium grease and silicone spray both work well on hinges, rollers and springs. A dry-film garage door lubricant holds up longer through a Missouri summer, because it doesn't stay tacky and attract dust the way grease can.

Question 3

Where should I not lubricate a garage door?

Accepted Answer

Skip nylon tracks. Lubricant on a nylon track attracts grit and dust, which makes the noise worse instead of better. Sealed-bearing nylon rollers also don't need lubrication at all.

Question 4

Why is my garage door so loud when it opens and closes?

Accepted Answer

Most noise traces to one of four causes: dry hinges and rollers (squeaking), a misaligned track or worn opener gears (grinding), loose hardware (rattling), or a loose opener chain (slapping). A single loud bang almost always means a spring failed.

Question 5

Is a noisy garage door always the rollers?

Accepted Answer

No. Rollers are a common cause, but loose hardware, a dry track, an aging opener chain and a failing spring can all sound similar from inside the house. Running the door through one full cycle while you listen usually narrows it down.

Question 6

How often should I lubricate my garage door?

Accepted Answer

About twice a year in St. Charles County: once heading into summer, when pollen and dust build up fastest, and once before the first hard freeze, when standard grease stiffens and starts to squeak again.
