Question 1

Can I make my existing garage door opener smart?

Accepted Answer

Usually, yes. Most openers made after 1993 that have safety sensors can take an add-on hub, such as a myQ hub or Genie's Aladdin Connect kit. Genie's kit does not work on LiftMaster or Chamberlain Security+ 2.0 openers, so those take myQ. If yours has no safety sensors, replace the opener instead.

Question 2

Does myQ require a monthly fee?

Accepted Answer

Live video is free on LiftMaster's camera openers, and myQ sells paid plans for recording. When we checked earlier in September 2026, the plan for one camera opener was $49.99 a year. Ask which features on your exact model need a plan before you buy.

Question 3

Does Aladdin Connect cost anything?

Accepted Answer

Genie says Aladdin Connect has no subscription fees. The app is free to download for iPhone and Android.

Question 4

Are smart garage door openers worth it?

Accepted Answer

For most homes, yes, if only for the alert when the door is left open. It is less worth it for a garage you rarely use, or if Wi-Fi does not reach the garage.

Question 5

What are the downsides of a smart garage door opener?

Accepted Answer

It needs Wi-Fi in the garage, and some features need a paid plan. An old opener without safety sensors also has to be replaced before it can go smart.

Question 6

Does a smart opener still work without Wi-Fi?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your wall button and remotes keep working. Only the app needs the connection. A model with battery backup also opens and closes when the power is out, though LiftMaster's manual says remote close, Timer-to-Close and the camera are off on battery. Our best LiftMaster garage door opener guide has the battery details.

Question 7

Which smart openers does Gateway install?

Accepted Answer

We install LiftMaster openers with myQ built in and Genie openers with Aladdin Connect built in. You can book a free estimate on our garage door opener replacement page.
